Back this week with another dose of The Juice, your random burst of info about what's going on in & around your indie scene. May has events & drops falling out the sky, from mixtapes from the gawds to the coziness dance party on earth, we got you covered. Don't get stuck in the house this month, you might miss a gem, or two :).
Get your fill of beats with the chopped and screwed gawd himself, iLLADELL, and his latest drop, Palmetto Purple III. Yes, there are two other volumes of this, so catch up. This one features sauced up versions of newer tracks from all your SC native faves, and it's definitely worth the listen.
If you're in Columbia, SC tonight make sure you're down at Drip to celebrate BINACT’s 1 year anniversary! Butimnotacriticthough.com’s crate digging founder, Candice Johnson, has the backroom ready to turn up in honor of her indie blog’s bday, complete with dope tunes and a lovely little snapchat filter to put your cute faces in.
T-minus two days until #Jackin4Beats2 drops from Tribe favorite Goose Ragaa of 803 The Clique. Be prepared for sickening beats laced with Ragaa’s signature cadence & confidence, sure to leave you feeling yourself, or at least feeling him.
Speaking of listens, have you heard of The Very Hypnotic Soul Band? This group of low country based artists who untied for a charity show honoring the Emmanuel 9 have been blowing our minds ever since. A funky fusion of hip hop, soul and a dash of synth-pop, this band is every bit of its name and more. MC Benny Starr heads the electric group surrounded by silky smooth vocals from the incredible McKenzie Eddy, backed by Quentin Ravenel on drums, Elliott Smith on keyboard and Jimmie Choate on guitar. Be sure to catch them at Redux Contemporary Art Center next Wednesday, May 25th, ft. Natalie Royal. It's only $8, and you better cash in on this steal, because with the way they sound they should be charging more.
Fletcher Williams III is probably one of SC’s dopest visual artists, and that's putting it lightly. You have to see his work in person to understand just how intricate he is, and luckily, this month you can. Williams will be showing his newest body of work titled “Beyond the Rainbow” with an open reception on May 26th from 6:30-9:30pm. You'll be able to view this collection until June 1st at 134 Canon St in Charleston, SC.
Memorial Day usually goes beach then bar in the south for the whole weekend. Why not switch it up? When night falls, instead of hitting a club or wandering into a bar hoping for a decent time, hit up The Fake Race, the most comfortable party on earth. What makes it so comfy? You get to wear your workout clothes! The Fake Race is a running themed party and partial fundraiser geared towards sweating out edges & partying with a purpose. With DJ Scrib on the ones and twos, it's a guaranteed twerkout. If you missed the first one, you surely don't want to miss this one, and if you you made the first one, you already know what time it is. Early bird tickets went on sale Monday, but it's not too late to snag your “Runner’s Bib” for only $10. Hit up fakerace.com for all the info. Pro tip: slip resistant shoes are best for swag surfing.
